How to tag ’non-settlement’ place names?

3

How do you tag place names when they are not actually settlements, even hamlets. These sort of places are usually found in rural areas and, whilst they don't have any official or even unofficial, boundaries, are perhaps 2 to 10 miles square. I've been using simply place=*, is that correct?

Places without population should be tagged with place=locality. The name of an object should always be tagged with name=*.

If you know the border of the place you could make a multipolygon of them and add the place=* tag on that.

Small inhabited places (smaller then hamlets) can be tagged place=isolated_dwelling. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:place%3Disolated_dwelling
